Human Rights Law
What is human rights law?

Human rights law is the area of law that relates to the basic and fundamental rights and freedoms of every human being. Various international bodies exist that push for the enforcement of human rights in the Republic of Cyprus such as the European Union, Council of Europe and United Nations.

Abuses of human rights can take place in any part of life, or professional circumstance and there are mechanisms for people to use to seek compensation for their human rights violations.

Examples of human rights from the European Charter of Human rights are:

-
right to life,
-
prohibition of torture and inhumane or degrading treatment,
-
prohibition of slavery and forced labour,
-
right to liberty and security,
-
right to a fair trial,
-
right not to be punished without law,
-
right to respect for private and family life,
-
freedom of thought, conscience and religion,
-
freedom of expression,
-
freedom of assembly and association,
-
right to marry,
-
right to an effective remedy, and
-
prohibition of discrimination.

Lawyers with experience in human rights law can also assist owners of property in the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus by pursuing compensation for human rights violations and advising on available options.
